| This is a symbolic function, but one that has import. Foremost is that a Lebanon more united than at any time before is asserting itself. Israel punished all Lebanon for what Hizbollah did, and only Hisbollah fought back - until the last few days when Lebanese AAA units started to assert themselves. Hizbollah has saved Lebanon and at the same time submitted to the government of which it is a part. Big changes. Not ones to be noticed by ideologues outside of Lebanon. I suspect that neither Israel or Syria will ever be able to simply assume the right to do as it might with Lebanon. Syria was ousted by the Cedar Revolution, and Israel defeated in the South. They both should be thankful that the Lebanese mostly want peace, prosperity, and to enjoy life. |
