Yair Sheleg, Haaretz Correspondent, Haaretz Service and Agencies: Study: 40 percent of settlements were built on Palestinian land
Talkback
Title:40% of settlements... I don`t understand
Name:bbl
City: State:
Folks on this listing have been claiming non-stop that ALL of Israel (and if not that, at least ALL of the settlements) is land that was "stolen" from real Arabs.

With some approximate quick math...Israel could annex 10% of the West Bank and retain 80% of the settlements... The settlements and their supporting infrastructure must take up no more than 12% of the West Bank -- 40% of that is 5%...That`s 5% of the West Bank. The West Bank is less than 40% of the total land between the Jordan and the Med Sea.... 40% of 5% makes for 2%.

Well, which is it? Have the "evil land stealing Zionists" that so many like to rail about "stolen" 100% of the land or 2%?

The reality of it, if your only talking about land within the settlements, is that the 10% figure I started with includes roads and security corridors. The Settlements themselves are approx. 2% of the West Bank. That would push the actual "stolen" value down to 0.33% (1/3 of 1%) of the whole pie.

This is no deal breaker.
