I don`t mean sovereignty.
Last week I went on a guided tour of the Muslim Quarter of the Old City, sponsored by the Ben-Zvi Institute, a respectable and apolitical organizations which publishes, among other things, an important academic journal, Cathedra,
The object of the tour was to show how Jews used to live in the Old City in the 19th century, in poverty and overcrowded one-room dwellings - and together with Muslims, even in the Jewish Quarter. When there was no more room there, Jews began living in the Muslim Quarter as well.
The first most surprising revelation of the tour was that, prior to 1948, 99% (according to the guide) of all dwellings in the Old City occupied by Jews was owned by Muslims! And this includesd the Jewish Quarter.
Yes, there were some buildings owned by Jews, and in the Muslim Quarter as well (we visited these, and Jews live there today, in the same building with Muslims, as in the 19th century). (Let`s see if Talkback allows Part 2 through) |
