Daphna Berman, Haaretz Correspondent: Ex-U.S. envoy: Slim chance for Mideast peace by end of year
Talkback
Title:There will not be peace here so long as two elements are missing:
Name:Avihu
City: JerusalemState: Israel
1) Full recognition by the Arab leaders, Palestinian and otherwise, of Israel`s right to exist as the nation-state of the Jewish people.

Such recognition does not mean recognition in the fact that Israel indeed exists. We know that. We, Israelis, need to hear from Arab leaders, in Arabic, Hebrew and English, that Israel in thier eyes is a legitimate entity, having attempted so many times to liquidate it, to annihilate it, to erase any Jewish existence between the River and the Sea.

2) All acts of terror and violence against Israel and Israelis must cease, and all preparations for such acts of war against the Jewish state must come to an end. For us, Israelis, security matters is an existential issue, one in which we can not afford to loose. We would never take the risks necessary for an accomodation of peaceful co-existence so long as our opponents are out to mass murder our people and to attempt once again to annihilate our only collective home, the State of Israel.
