| I want to like Israel, Ambassador. I`ve travelled there and I`ve travelled in lots of Arab countries as well, and I have far more in common with Jewish Israelis. I admire Israel`s democratic values and the side of Israel which is pluralistic and secular and accepts, Jew, Muslim, Druze, Chrictian, straight, gay etc. However, I can`t accept the fact that Israel has kept the Pals in captivity for 40 years and thinks it has the right to keep them captive indefinitely until it feels safe. I know all the arguments, I know the Pals have made many mistakes, committed many crimes, I know setting them free will entail risk for Israel. I know all that and if there was any real sense of urgency on the Israeli side about finding a solution, I would shut up and let them get on with it. But there is no urgency. As far as the Israeli government is concerned, if the Pals rot in captivity for another 50 years or 500 years, it doesn`t seem to be a problem. Answer that point, Ambassador. |
