This is a major and justified victory for Israeli researchers, who have seen their real earnings drop while their counterparts in the U.S. make significantly more money.

So, it was a hard-won battle, but the struggle continues: More money still needs to be pumped into the universities to prevent departments from shrinking (further contributing to brain drain), to guarantee set-up packages that are competitive on the global market, and to reduce the overall teaching load of faculty so that they can devote more time to research. Furthermore, university administration needs to be made smaller, more transparent, friendlier, and far more efficient.

Something like 20-30% of all Nobel prize-winners have been Jews. Israel is home to 41% of the world`s Jews. There is no reason why Israeli scientists cannot account for at least 10% of all Nobel prizes, if the government cuts out its penny-pinching and provides a proper research infrastructure.
