Title:The Orange on the Seder Plate Tradition
Name:B`Galil
City: State: Israel
The daughter of one of America`s greatest rabbis, Rav Abraham Joshua Heschel, Z``L, was speaking in Florida, a state known for it`s abundant orange crop. She was speaking about women`s learning and Jewish practice. Her father came from a tradition where women are allowed on the bimah and are permitted to participate in the same service as men.

All-of-a-sudden a man in the back stood up and shouted "a woman belongs on the bimah like an orange belongs on a seder plate"!

There are many families (ours included) that put an orange on the seder plate in order to remind ourselves that Jewish tradition can include women in Jewish practice.
