Barak Ravid, Haaretz Correspondent and Reuters: FM: Ending peace talks now would bolster Hamas
Talkback
Title:olmert`s being a politician; & politics does NOT make peace

while i think that he honestly does believe in peace and is striving for peace; his being a politician is counterproductive to his efforts of achieving it.

"israel will not construct any new settlements but will continue building in existing settlement blocs and jerusalem"...
not building any new settlements has been promised for how many years now? how about toeing the line with NO expansion of ANY settlements OR jerusalem, until there`s a final agreement. and there`s sure to be some settlements that will have to abandoned; while would israel continue building in them if it "really" has any intentions towards peace?

"...jerusalem would be the last item on the agenda"...
why put this last on the agenda? it`s going to have to be dealt with eventually; so what purpose is served by delaying it? there`s no magic gremlins that are going to make its negotiating any easier in the interim. actually, the opposite is true; especially with israel`s continued expansion within it.
it`s understood that it`s a stickler for the negotiations in general; but why not maintain a simultaneous, yet completely separate, negotiation regarding jerusalem in progress at the same time?

"one possibility for an imminent agreement is signing a declaration of principles"...
no no no...not that old ploy! history has proven this idea to be a dead end; yet israel almost always insists on it. "let`s negotiate a plan to negotiate"...sorry, but that`s the same old "we`ll concede NOTHING, but we`ll agree to discuss it" approach that has led NOWHERE every time there`s a serious peace iniative. just stick with negotiating towards a "conclusion"!

"...a final peace accord could not be implemented unless terror was stopped completely from gaza"...
on the one hand i can understand his stance on this subject; but on the other hand i can also see how it`s just another delay for peace and a palestinian state, which has always suited israel`s overall goals. and realistically, what it`s doing is holding ALL palestinians accountable for hamas; and holding the palestinian state hostage. but there`s one other consideration here as well, which should be considered. hamas thrives on discontent. so what better way to defuse hamas, than the creation of a palestinian state in the west bank; with gaza left in limbo until it comes to terms with the agreement?
