It appears that deterrent is a concept almost forgotten at the highest echelons of the Israeli government. That is why the mere 2-3,000 of Hizbullah fighters could challenge the mighty IDF and get away with a draw while the happy international chorus of Israeli detractors cheered on and declared victory because they were expecting to be wiped out and, to their supprise, were left intact and able to re-arm to a higher level. Very few of the Israeli goals were achieved in the Lebanon war. Having learned from that Hamas seeks to emulate the result. Why is that ?

It is because following the decisive victories against its enemies leading up to 1972, a new generation of Israeli leaders arose that fed off the deterrent power earned by the earlier leaders. This asset is none totally depleted. It is time to stop re-inventing the laws of war and show the enemy that fire can only be fought with an overwhelming fire. Peace will come after the guns have fallen silent.
