It should come as no surprise that Haniyeh is more popular that Abbas. In cases where the choice is between a ?heroic? leader standing up to the enemy and a wimpy bureaucrat, the public will always choose the former, especially when he has the guns to back up his position.
This eliminates at least one option for Israel: it cannot prop up Abbas forever. Hamas will inevitably take over the West Bank as well. Consequently, Israel must act in its own immediate best interests and if that costs Abbas his popularity, position or more, so be it. |
