| Much of the criticism of Allam is right on target concerning Islam. It has gone from being a religion of enlightenment to one of rigid fundamentalism that sees anything outside of itself as threatening to which it relates adverserially. It has not solved the dilemma of how it conducts itself in a pluralistic society where it finds itself one among many religions. For example, Muslims students in a public school demanding that the cafeteria serve ONLY hallal food. As for his conversion, it was personal but clearly also an act with political implications, barried out in such a public way- on one level a great honour to be baptised by the Pope in St Peters on Easter, on the other a clear statement to Muslims in general that what he has gained they sadly lack. |
