| The Druze referred to in the article are Druze from the Golan (conquered in 1967 and annexed in 1981) who have always considered themselves Syrian unlike the Galilee Druze. The burnings were perpetrated in part due to their non-recognition of Israeli law and their wanting to show Syrian dictator Assad that they are loyal Syrians. If Israel were to return the Golan to Syria, it is likely that Assad search for Druze who have "collaborated" with Israel and punish them. |
