| the state does fund the construction of mosques and also pays for imams salaries. Just as they pay for Orthodox synagogues and Orthodox rabbis salaries. It is dispicable that the state refuses to pay for the synagogues of other movements while it pays for non-jewish spirtual leaders and their buildings. The majority of the tax paying Israel is disgusted by Judaism b/c all they see is the Orthodox monopoly on the state, doing things from allowing yeshiva students not to serve in the military or have an abbreviated military service to stripping the conversation certificate away from olim from Russia b/c they might not observe Shabbat to supporting the settler movement. The slow yet steady grow of the Reform and Conservative movements in Israel, is only something that will help the state. It will allow these secular Israelis (many of whom do want a taste of Judaism in their daily lives) to have an option besides the disgraceful orthodox monopoly. |
