The United Nations Refugee and Works Agency yesterday demanded that Israel conduct an enquiry into the death of a mother of six during an Israeli military operation in Gaza last Wednesday. Wafa al-Daghma, a 32 year old UNRWA schoolteacher was killed during an Israeli army raid near her house in Khan Younis in the Southern Gaza Strip. Chris Gunness, UNRWA spokesman, said that the Israelis detonated a device near the front door of the house, which killed Wafa, destroying her head. Daghma`s husband and three of her children were out, but her daughter Samira and two of her sons, both under six, were at home. Samira heard the explosion, saw her mother fall to the ground and ran into the house to hide with her two brothers. After the blast at 4.00 p.m. the soldiers took over the house to use as lookout post and stayed there until 11.00 p.m. as the children huddled in the dark without electricity. When the soldiers left Samira found her mother and alerted neighbours who recovered the body. |
