One huge problem with the growing Western perspective on Jewishness is that in order to "fit in" better with the surrounding peoples, Jews and others are beginning to turn the Jewish nation into just a religion. The fundamental aspect of the Jewish people is that we are a nation descended from our ancestors, the Israelites. We have a national religion, as did all ancient peoples, but it is not necessary to believe in that religion to be a part of the Jewish people. Making Judaism merely a religion will destroy the Jewish people and all of our claims to ethnic identity, peoplehood, and especially our right to Israel.
