It is Hamas that desperately needs the ceasefire to restock its weapons depots and build up its strength for the next encounter (and you may be sure that there will be one as long as Hamas is determined to destroy Israel).

Therefore, it is quite logical for Israel to demand the release of Gilad Shalit as a precondition for such a ceasefire. There need be no quid pro quo, in terms of prisoner release on the part of Israel.

If Hamas doesn`t like it, they can lump it.
