The strategy of siege is a failure. It has not produced any move towards peace. Neither has the confrontation strategy. That has only made things worse for both sides with the revenge cycle.
Both strategies are lemons. It is time to make lemonade.
It is becoming clearer that Egypt cannot sustain the siege for its own domestic reasons. This is being recognized by even the IDF. At some point, it will even become clear to the US and the rest of the Israeli government.
Israel knows that the Egyptian government can slow smuggling, but not stop it entirely. Even with the IDF on the border, some smuggling occurred. And it is not all weapons. The last great discovery was of children`s toys.
Egypt can control smuggling of heavy weapons. It is time for a more realistic approach to this confrontation. |
