As much as I respect your right to commemorate your tragedy, it cannot be in the framework of the Independence Day of Israel. A day of such a great historical significance cannot be marred by hysterionics about a war which the Arab countries launched and lost.
The Independence Day of Israel does not commemorate the War of Independence but the Declaration of Independence issued prior to the war, hoping that a war could be prevented if all the inhabitants of previous Palestine accepted the UN Resolution of Partition. It could have been your Independence Day too. So let us celebrate together the potential of the two states that still can be realized.
However, if you see the Naqba as a parallel to Tish`ah B`Av then commemorate it on Tish`ah B`Av, when all the attrocities of history are commemorated. Sure it is a Jewish holiday but so is the Day of Independence. But beware, the losses of Tish`ah b`Av can and will never be recovered. |
