Obama has said that the Palestinians must recognize Israel and Israel must understand that some of the settlements are an obstacle to peace. But Israel has always been willing to abandon most of the settlements. It did so unilaterally in Gaza in 2005. The world reacted by condemning Israel for withdrawing before an agreement had been reached. The Palestinians reacted by firing rockets at Israeli citizens.
Sharon, recognized as a hawk, said that settlements in Gaza and most of the West Bank had to be withdrawn. Hamas says that Israel must be eliminated. Bin Laden is saying so every day. Nasrallah has said that Allah allowed Israel to be created so that lots of Jews could be killed at once instead of being hunted down all over the world.
