"Limited fuel supplies in the Gaza Strip have led to the widespread use of a new substitute: cooking oil. But the smell, the exhaust and health concerns have led to the rampant use of surgical masks in Gaza`s streets. For many, the new smell permeating the streets causes nausea, vomit and difficulty breathing. But most of all, Gazans fear the new commodity is cancerous."
Cooking oil only works in diesel cars and its only downside is that exhaust fumes smell like a chip shop. They are far less harmful that petrochemical fumes. There`s a thriving market in Britain in simple home kits that turn waste cooking oil into perfectly usable fuel for diesel cars at about 35 cents a litre. (Regular diesel in Britain in, believe it or not, selling at £1.30 a litre or around $2.55). |
