Yesterday (12:00 PM May 21, 2008) FoxNews reported that Iran had rented a Singaporean Supertanker and filled it with crude oil (or distillate). They attributed this act to economic motives, since oil hit a record high of $132/barrel. However, Iran has a number of large tankers filled with oil anchored in the Persian Gulf. Lacking a nuclear or radiological bomb, Iran seems to be planning ahead militarily. As a blackmail tactic, the scuttling of these ships sequentially could easily ward off an extended attack on Iranian military and atomic facilities, since they would cause the largest environmental disaster in modern history. The Iranian dedication to their death cult and their rejection of the right to life of other people with differing belief systems make it all the more likely that the political and military echelons will be in agreement in using these tankers as weapons of mass destruction. Has our military taken these tankers into account as part of any strike against Iran?
