No, Natalie, the reason for creating the Human Rights Council was not because the USA vetoed every UN reso critical of Israel, but because its predecessor, the Human Rights Committee was focusing only on one country: Israel.
Kofi Annan (the former Secretary General of the UN) decided that you can`t focus only on Israel, if there are countries who are greater violators of human rights.
Therefore the Human Rights Council (HRC) was created, which again doesn`t do a thing, except focusing on Israel.
The HRC hasn`t said anything useful on the grave situation in Darfur, Tibet, Zimbabwe etc. in which human rights violations occur which are far worse than the situation in the Palestinian Areas. The HRC itself is just a joke (its presidents were Libya and China... which are well known for their great human rights record :cough, cough:) and is also criticized by the UN itself. |
