I concur. I think Assad feels enough confidence in his own powerbase he can make the tough decision of making peace with Isreal than he could before. Isreal should sieze it. The Golan has lost its military significance from 1967. Syria knows it could inflict great damage to Isreal if they choose to ever cross the border after the Second Lebanon War, but Syria also knows they don`t have the military might to ever mount an offensive threat to Isreal. I also think Assad realizes he has more to gain being on the US good side than bad side, particualarly if things come to a head with Iran. Syria has much to lose if they side with Iran in such a conflict. He is milking both sides, no doubt, but Iran is not exactly a burgeoning economic giant, and are infact in a downward spiral. He is looking out for himself, but sometimes thats what you need to make peace deals.
