Why is the government not punishing these people as they should be punished? Settlers cannot expect the protection of the IDF and the Israeli police without being subject to the same laws that pertain to the rest of the country. Is attacking people and beating them permitted east of the green line but not west of it? Do the occupied territories have their own set of laws, or perhaps none at all? The issue is not protecting Palestinians: the issue is that the law is the law. Renegades who break the law have to be tried and put in jail whether the attacker or the victim is a Jew or a Palestinian. If the settlers want to live by another set of laws and think they can get away with it, than they can also relinquish the right to Israeli police protection. Perhaps they would like to be protected by the palestinian police force instead. Maybe that would make them think twice before beating people up. |
