The majority of the Israeli public is against giving up the Golan but Olmert, the man who probably has about 1% approval rating nationaly he wants to cut a deal with Assad give up the Golan. Olmert can see Nobel peace prizes on the horizon and he wants to grab it before he leaves office. Israel needs the Golan more than it needs a treaty with Syria. Peace treaties are nice when they are for the right reason Assad has no interest in real peace but this peace treaty that involves giving up the Golan will give Israel less stability & security not the other way around. Peace cannot come at any price, security & stability first which Israel generaly has under the current situation formal treaties are for the idealists not the realists who are interested in whats going to be best for Israel which is at the end of the day should be the most important issue for Israel not handshakes on the White House lawn.
