Lakshmi quoted "a blockade(itself an act of war)are presently being contemplated by the Security Council"

A US blockade to halt Iranian enrichment (without UN Sec. Council authorization) would be an act of war. So would any Israeli action. Blockades authorized by the UN would NOT be an act of war.

Iran`s compliance with the NPT is legally in the hands of the UN Sec. Council. Not Israel, not the US. Only the UN can lawfully enforce the NPT.

Since Iran has SIGNED the NPT, Iran has agreed to give the UN the authority to enforce the NPT. The UN can blockade Iran under the UN`s authority to enforce the NPT. It will NOT be an act of war if done this way. It will be an act of enforcement based upon a treaty that Iran has already agreed to.

This is why Obama is right about the need for diplomacy. It is the only lawful way.

If Israel doesn`t like the NPT being enforced this way, they should sign the NPT and petition for an amendment to the enforcement clause of the NPT.
