You are quite right that the soldier in question who was ordered to shoot the prisoner is responsible for his actions. A mitigating circumstance is that his commanding officer should clearly have been aware of it that he was giving an illegal order, thereby putting the soldier under pressure. On the video footage this young soldiers appears to be hesitant and he looks strained, so he propably had some conflicting thoughts on the morality and the legality of the order. This young man is doing his compulsory army service. I wonder to what extent young army recruits are infused with the ethos of questioning/defying illegal orders? An important issue, because this episode is only the tip of the iceberg. After the infamous massacre of Kafr Qassem Israeli soldiers are supposed to question blatantly illegal orders. The Israeli army supposedly prides itself on its `purity of arms` code. Does any one know what the code of practice is taught to young recruits? |
