| Abbas, it seems, has finally understood that Israel will always treat him with contempt because he is willing to attempt to negotiate peace, while Israel only respects those who can stand up to it. Thus he makes a last plea for Israel to deal with him. Israel has spend the entire time Abbas has been in control of the PA undermining him. Israel continues to undermine him at ever opportunity today. Hamas has been opposed at Israel at every possible point, yet Israel at least deals with Hamas. I personally think this policy was - and is - insane. For Abbas would have struck a far more benevolent deal with Israel than Hamas will. But the dream that somehow the Palestinians will just disappear dies hard in Israel. So Israel will just have to deal with Hamas instead of the far more pliable Abbas. |
