| 1) Was Abbas right to make this threat? He may as well, since he knows that his appointed govt will fall once Hamas can vote itself back into govt. At which point he either becomes a Hamas puppet or he resigns. 2) Would he carry out this threat? No much point; the President does not have the power under the PA Basic Laws to do this, so it requires that he stage a coup and rule as a dictator. Is there ANYONE on Earth who believes Abbas could survive a week as a Palestinian strongman? 3) Should the Israelis have released this info? No. It dooms Abbas just as surely as if Israel put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger. I can only assume that Israel is feeling the heat from Condi, and this is their way of aborting the negotiations i.e. release information that Abbas delivered (a) in secret and (b) at arms-length to ensure that Abbas is killed by his own people. Viola!! The heat goes off Israel. Pity the long-term problems this will create for Israel... |
