| If Israel releases Hamas operatives for Shalit, Abbas threatens to dismantle his own support structure, diminish his own stature among the Palestinians and betray Palestinian aspirations for a negotiated peace with Israel? That`s some great politician there. I think it`s becoming clear to everyone now that Israel should have been negotiating with Hamas all along, not propping up Abbas` sagging kleptocratic hide. And so Palestinian politics approach the end of a wild gyration that nobody can foretell the complete implications of. It seems Hamas is about to incur yet more responsibility in the Occupied Territories. Let`s hope they`re up to the task. |
