(1) Islam has been using force ever since your PBUH gained a degree regional clout. The ONLY reason that Islam exists from Morocco to Mindanao and wider today is that the sword was used to spread it in the first place. Most of Isla`s 1,400 years of existence have been characterized by wars. When and how did, say, the Austrians "oppress" anybody to have warranted hundreds of years of Ottoman siege???
(2) Yeah, popular myths, those. True: Islam was much more advanced vis-a-vis human rights, etc. than Xianity for many a century but that began changing DRAMATICALLY from the 16th century onward. Fact is that today each and every one of Muslim polities is a beacon of one or more forms of oppression. (I live in one myself.)
