So you bought the State Department`s lie about Jews in Nicaragua. Too bad. The vast majority of Nicaragua`s Jews who left the country did so because of economic reasons just as did wealthier non-Jews. It was not because of any anti-Semitism.
When I went to Nicaragua in 1985 I was invited to dinner at the home of a neighbor of my hostess. I thought that perhaps she might be Jewish and indeed she was. I asked her about anti-Semitism in Nicaragua. With a laugh she said that was absolutely untrue, that she was Jewish as was her whole family as was her uncle who was Nicaragua`s ambassador to the US.
The night I arrived home then Sec. of State Schultz intoned on TV that there was not a Jew left in Nicaragua.
The canard about the Jews was a deliberate lie by the Reagan administration in an attempt to get Jews on the bandwagon to overthrow the democratically elected Nicaraguan government. There was no lie so low to which the Reagan administration would not stoop and this was just one. |
