(continued from above)
The current reality of endless fighting, both in and out, of billions spent on defense and constantly being on edge is unsustainable. Israel is suffering brain drain with too many educated and skilled people emigrating to places where they can be compensated for their work without worrying about being blown up. There is a real and growing internal secular and religious divide that must be addressed, as well as generations of Israelis growing up without enough understanding of their own history, culture, and why the place is worth fighting for. All of these important issues and more are being put on the back-burner because of the endless and intractable battle with the Palestinians. A battle which, as their birthrates continue to rise and ours continue to stagnate, will take a much more dangerous form very soon, as Nusseibeh warns, with Arabs fighting for civil rights a la blacks in South Africa instead of being terrorists angling for independence. |
