The US does not yet have a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) with Iraq. Without one, the US must exit Iraq fully on December 31 this year. Iraq is demanding that the US and any forces remaining in Iraq respect Iraqi sovereignty. Bush is hoping that the Iraqis will compromise. But the US allowing another country to use Iraqi airspace would destroy all Bush hopes of reaching a deal.
This is just one of many reasons not to facilitate an unnecessary war with Iran. The US is also examining sales of M1-A1s and Bradleys and F-16s to Iraq so they can defend their own country once the US leaves. Sales could top $100 Billion.
An unnecessary war could impede those sales. |
