Our dear Swiss friend, Yom Kippur is both a religious holiday, a national holiday, & a national consensus. For secular Jews such as myself (left-wing almost Communist, complete atheist) it is a tradition & also considered a "day without cars" such as is practiced in many countries around the world. The difference being that in most places in the world 50% refrain from driving & 50% don`t give a shit. Here children rides their bicycles & rollerblades down the middle of the busiest thoroughfares with no fear of cars. For nothing to do with religious reasons whatsoever, I also, when I see a car driving on Yom Kippur, want to drag the driver out of the car & beat the crap out of him! Having said that, I don`t condone, not in the least, physical violence or stone-throwing. It is religious coercion & racism, plain & simple, & people practicing violence should be punished.
Know it`s hard to understand.
