The Palestinian Arabs who make up 20 percent of Israel,s citizens are still far less well off than Israeli Jews and feel increasingly unwanted. The original Palestinian inhabitants and their descendants, now all Israeli Arab citizens, live in packed towns and villages, often next to the old villages, and are barred from resettling them while Jewish communities around them are urged to expand. Although full citizens under the law, they suffer political discrimination based on decades of social exclusion. Israel?s Arab minority rejects the idea of Israel as a Jewish state and demands a partnership in governing the country to ensure that Arab citizens get equal treatment and more control over their communities. Nearly half of Israel?s Arabs live below the poverty line, and their rates of unemployment and infant mortality are twice the national average. Exempt from military service, they do not qualify for thousands of higher-paying jobs reserved for veterans. Jewish extremists who attack Palestinians arabs in Israel and in the occupied territories, rarely face charges, even when there is clear evidence of wrongdoing.
