| Aliyah, I became shocked at the Israeli system of absolute proportional representation as I began to observe its inadequacies. I became shocked due to the backroom deals and the lack of accountability to Israeli citizens. I have since read that this form of government is a leftover from the Ben Gurion era and that perhaps it was beneficial at one time. While lack of proportional representation in Canada certainly has its pitfalls, at least there is accountability on the part of MPs to their constituents. Not so in Israel. As a result, the Israeli population, in general, feels powerless. Israel is becoming a mature country now and deserves a better system of government. I believe that at least two of the larger players after the next election, Likud and Yisrael Beiteinu, will seek to alter the electoral system in a way which will serve the interests of all Israeli citizens. |
