"Bush and the EU have built up a front against Iran."
Excuse me? What front? Bush could have dealt with the Iranians six years ago. But he instead concentrated on Iraq and ignored the Iranian threat leaving the problem to the British, French and Germans to resolved. These "Big 3" failed miserably. Meanwhile, China and Russia built up economic ties with Iran. European companies followed so not to be left out in the cold. Even several US companies now deal with Iran. So now there are business reasons why no one wants to take serious action against Iran.
But Bush knew he had to do something. He decided to give the Iranians the silent treatment. This got a good laugh from all as the Iranians became the dominant military power in the Muslim Mid-East. Bush has seen his failures and has quietly opened up US negotiations with Iran on the lower diplomatic level. But with a military exhaused by Iraq and an economy in ruins, we are dealing with Iran from a position of weekness. |
