Interesting, isn`t it? While I am sceptical of the motives of all those involved, a move like this does represent a challenge to a lot of the nonsense of the bigots on both sides.
A few thoughts:
- whatever is the truth of this case, there must be Palestinians and other Muslims who descend from Jewish families (whether conversion was voluntary, forced, or something between) - (remember the Brother Daniel precedent) will they have to "convert" to Judaism to go to Israel? - there could be real fun (think Shoshanna Miller) if they undertook a Reform conversion. - would they have to go to a third country to convert before being allowed across the border? - would they be any different from any other Arab who wants to convert?
To most of us the idea of a forced conversion is abhorrent, and following it up with another even more so. But probably not to everyone.
I predict that somehow this case will not be decided for a LONG time. Think "embarassment" and "precedent"! |
