I appreciate your comment in general and the reference to Toscanini, in particular. He, the greatest of all conductors, also played Wagner in the US during WWII while the US was fighting the Nazis. As he was a synonym in the 30s for anti-fascism and a convinced democrat(in politics, though not in conducting, fortunately enough for those of us who don`t believe in performance by routine), his approach of separating the man and the ideology from the music seems the correct one. |
