What the Second Lebanese War demonstrated that when the IDF is pitted against highly trained, well led, well equipped fighters who are prepared to die for their cause it struggles. The problem for the Israelis is motivation. Asking a soldier to fight and possibly die in a place like South Lebanon (which Israel had already occupied and retreated from) is difficult. So it will prove in Gaza. Additionally, the Israelis have grown soft with affluence and their soldiers would certainly rather be back home watching their wide-screen televisions than dodging bullets and booby traps in the rubble of some Palestinian or Lebanese hellhole. |
