In war, accidents happen. Even with the best intelligence in the world, the US accidently bombed the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade a few years back. However, when disasters hit, they need real investigations, and there needs to be a sense that people will be held to account if they broke rules of engagement or targetted civilians.
Unlike some here, I have concluded that although Israel has compelling interests in this operation, the current campaign is illegitimate because there seems to be no plan to bring about reconciliation afterwards. It is very much this sort of half-measure that will cost more Israeli and Palestinian lives than either doing nothing or a full-on occupation would (with nation-building of course). |
