Israel will be trying to prevent any unity government at all -- but has nothing like the influence over the situation she once had. The US and Fatah would like a `unity` government that consists as much as possible of Hamas just agreeing to no share of power at all.
Hamas, of course, wants the reverse. What`s more, you can`t have a `unity` government without the majority party.
It`s important to realize that the demands of the US et al don`t actually have to be met. In the end, any unity government at all will be recognized. Probably best if the Palestinians work out who in Fatah would be acceptable to Hamas as p.m. Indeed, inasmuch as the `unity` government will have to agree to various statements that Hamas could never accept, it is best if most of the `crust` is non-Hamas.
Ironically, this suggests that if the US et al actually do want to housebreak Hamas, they would be better off with a Hamas p.m. et al. Then they could force Hamas to accept compromises. |
