While I certainly agree that for the 21st century a rapproachment between Jews and Muslims should take priority, there is a major difference in this situation than was true in past dialogue with Catholics and other Christians. In the latter case, because of the history of religion-linked anti-Semitism, the onus was on the Christian side to secure a reconciliation. Rabbi Schneier`s remarks would seem to indicate that he feels it is the Muslim side that needs to `be the penitent` in the discussions he promotes. Israeli Jews, at least, must be aware there are aspects of relations with Muslims that legitimately require `atonement` on the Jewish side as well.
