| Peres is intelligent enough to see that the Netayahu/Lieberman approach of confrontation with the US is a disaster. So he reckons it`s now time to pretend to agree with the US, while in reality seeking every effort to delay progress towards peace. He`s seen the main weakness of the US position. This is that it`s based on the Road Map, a document designed never to lead to peace, because it has so many little steps and the process can break down at any point. So Peres says Israel should accept a Pal state with temporary borders. OK. Except we already pretty much have one of those. It`s called the PA. And I bet Peres isn`t intending his temporary Pal state to be anything much larger or more powerful than that. So now Peres envisages a period of interminable arguing about where the temporary borders will be, and at the end of that, even if there`s agreement, the magic from Peres` view is that they`re not permanent anyway. So all through that long process, settlements will keep on building. |
