It`s almost bizarre that Arad takes that seriously.
The only reason nations in the Eastern Mediterranean like Greece & Turkey were added to NATO in 1949 is because they were seen as strategic assets against Soviet expansion... bulwarks, if you will.
Israel, on the other hand (and this is not necessarly my opinion) is seen by many in the West today as a strategic liability... as more provocative than beneficial.
Barring a major regional war that drags Europe in, far in excess than their commitments to Iraq & Afghanistan, it`s extremely unlikely that Israel will be offered, let alone granted, NATO membership anytime soon. So I sincerely hope that the Israeli Foreign Ministry doesn`t waste its time. |
