Convicted terrorist released from jail due to declining health
By Jack Khoury, Haaretz Correspondent

Israeli authorities on Tuesday released a security prisoner who was sentenced 23 years ago for his role in committing and planning numerous attacks against Israeli targets in the Golan Heights.

Haaretz has learned that the prisoner, Sitao Eluli, was released due to his deteriorating health. In recent years, he has suffered from a serious illness. Upon his release from the Gilboa prison, he was transferred to Rambam Medical Center in Haifa.

Eluli is expected to return to his home village of Majdel Shams in the Golan Heights on Wednesday. Villagers are said to be planning a rousing welcome for Eluli, who will also pay a visit to the nearby villages of Mas'ada and Bukata.

Eluli's attorney, Majd Abu Salah, told Haaretz that his client's release was strictly due to health reasons, and is in no way connected to the recent prisoner swap with Hezbollah. Abu Salah said his client is suffering from a serious condition that will require intensive treatments and therapy. His chances for recovery are slim, the lawyer said.

Eluli told the Nazareth-based Radio A-Shams that the security prisoners currently serving their sentences in Israeli jails are disappointed their release will not be included in the prisoner swap deal between Israel and Hezbollah. Eluli called on officials handling the Gilad Shalit-prisoner swap negotiations between Hamas and Israel to demand their release as part of any agreement. "Leaving prisoners behind bars means [bringing about] a loss of life," Eluli said.
