Pop singer Aviv Gefen pens new ballad calling to free Shalit
By Haaretz Service
Tags: Israel, Aviv Gefen

Israeli pop singer Aviv Gefen has written a new song dedicated to abducted Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, entitled "Everbody's Child" (Hayeled shel kulanu), which he performed on Tuesday night at a mass rally calling on the government to expedite a deal for Shalit's release.

In a note attached to the single, Gefen wrote: "Shalom, everyone. More than two years have passed already since Gilad was kidnapped and who knows how many doors he is sitting behind now, frightened.

"He is not far from us and the job of those who sent him there is also to bring him home. We must do everything to influence the political echelon to make a brave choice.

"I ask everyone who receives this letter to work toward Gilad's release. I wrote this song for Gilad's family and friends, and I am donating the proceeds of the song to the campaign for his release. Our obligation is to reveal our humaneness in this difficult hour and bring him home."

Hundreds of people gathered at Rabin Square in Tel Aviv on Tuesday evening at a rally in honor of Shalit. Shalit was kidnapped by Palestinian militants in June 2006 and has been held captive in the Gaza Strip for over two years.

His company was discharged Tuesday after formally completing their three years of mandatory service. Their first steps as reservists were to walk the nine kilometers that separate the Bakum base in Tel Hashomer from the Defense Minister's Bureau in the Kirya military compound in the heart of Tel Aviv.

Shalit's comrades met with Ehud Barak and asked him - as someone who once served as a commanding officer - to work toward achieving their friend's release. They said that the meeting was pleasant, and that Barak told them efforts are underway to secure Shalit's freedom.

They added that Barak told them part of the process was being conducted secretly to prevent it from being subject to sabotage.
