Scientist tells Israelis: Hang up your cell phones already
By Ofri Ilani

Israelis talk too much on cellular phones, says Dr. Siegal Sadetzki, head of the Gertner Institute for Epidemiology, whose study found a link between cell phone use and tumor development.

"In Israel we exaggerate in everything we do, including talking on cell phones," she says.

"It's unbelievable how much we use cell phones. People don't think about the risks. We're offered something, so we buy. We want third generation, fourth, etc. There should be a public debate on the amount and way we use it and at what age."

Sadetzki, the senior Israeli partner to the international Interphone Study published some six months ago, found that heavy cell phone users ran a higher risk of benign and malignant tumors of the salivary gland.

The study examined the effect of cell phone use on people who have used it for more than 10 years in 15 countries including Israel.

"We found a higher risk of tumors developing on the side of the head people where use the phone," she says.

Sadetzki recommends cutting down exposure to mobiles and distancing the phone from the head or using a speaker phone - especially important for children. "There is no reason for a 4-year-old to speak on the cell phone," she says.

Her team will shortly begin a study on how cell phones affect children, financed by the European Union. "This is clearly the most important issue today," she says. "But even before we have accurate data, we must adopt the principle of caution and prevention."

Three prominent neurosurgeons declared on Larry King Live on CNN last month that despite the absence of absolute proof that cell phones are hazardous to one's health, they don't hold cell phones to their ears because they believe they're dangerous.

In many cases reports on the hazards of mobile phone use are manipulated by cell phone companies. For example, some three years ago British scientists whose work was financed by cellular companies omitted the health hazards of cell phones from the press release of their findings.

Their statement said that a long term study found that mobile phone use did not raise the risk of cancer. They omitted mentioning that people who used cell phones for more than 10 years had 80 percent more chance of developing an acoustic neuroma than non cell phone users.

Newspapers at the time came out with headlines saying that "cell phones do not cause cancer."
