Diplomatic effort on Iran nukes jeopardized by U.S.-Russia crisis
By Shlomo Shamir, Haaretz Correspondent

The crisis between the United States and Russia has led to the suspension of diplomatic efforts to draft a new resolution imposing harsher sanctions on Iran.

The foreign ministers of the group of six the five Security Council members and Germany who will be in New York next month for the United Nation's General Assembly, were scheduled to hold a special meeting to advance a proposal of tougher sanctions against Iran.

However, reports of Russia's decision to halt international cooperation have raised fears in the UN that Russia will drastically reduce or halt its active involvement and participation in the group of six.

The group of six deals with the Security Council's response to Iran's nuclear program and has drafted the council's last three resolutions against Iran over the last two years.

"In view of the escalation of the crisis between Russia and the United States and NATO members, the chances of Russia's supporting the new initiative for sanctions against Iran are almost non-existent," a senior diplomat who was involved in the group's discussions said on Thursday.

As a standing Security Council member, Russia has a veto right and can foil resolution proposals.

Senior UN sources on Thursday voiced concern over the activities of international UN bodies in which Russia fulfills a central role, including the Mideast Quartet.

Quartet foreign ministers were also scheduled to meet next month in New York to examine the developments between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.
